Morning prayer before work: prayers and a 5-minute plan

A morning prayer before work gives the day to God before the day starts making demands. Thank him for the work and the strength to do it, ask for wisdom and patience for what's on your calendar, pray for the people you'll work with, and ask him to make your work good. Psalm 90:17 is a prayer God's people have prayed over their work for thousands of years: "Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands" (WEB).

Below: a prayer to pray before work today, a 5-minute routine that fits before a shift or a commute, prayers for hard days and particular jobs, what the Bible says about work, and how to keep praying once the day begins. Scripture is from the World English Bible.

A morning prayer before work, to pray today

"Lord, before the emails and the clock and the to-do list, this day is yours.

Thank you for my work, for the strength to do it, and for the people it lets me serve. Today I have (name what's on your calendar). Give me wisdom for it. Where I don't know what to do, show me; you promised to give wisdom to anyone who asks.

Help me work hard and honestly, as if I'm working for you, because I am. Give me patience with (name) and kindness toward (name). Keep my words clean and my temper slow.

When I'm tempted to cut corners, to gossip, or to worry, remind me that you're with me at my desk, in the truck, on the floor, in the meeting.

Establish the work of my hands. In Jesus' name, amen."

Short prayers before work

A one-minute prayer for a busy morning

"Lord, I'm rushing. Go before me. Give me a clear head, a kind mouth and honest hands today. Amen."

For a hard day ahead

"Father, I already know today will be hard. (Name what's coming.) I don't have the strength for all of it, but I have enough for the next hour, and you'll give me the next. Your grace is enough. Carry me through. Amen." (2 Corinthians 12:9)

For a big meeting, presentation or interview

"Lord, I'm nervous about (name it). Help me prepare well and then let it go. Give me calm, clear words, and help me listen as well as I speak. Whatever happens, my worth isn't in this meeting; it's in you. Amen."

For a difficult boss

"God, working for (name) is hard. Help me respect the role even when I struggle with the person. Give me wisdom to know when to stay quiet and when to speak up, and the courage to do it well. Bless them today; I mean it, even if I don't feel it. Amen." (Matthew 5:44, Romans 12:18)

For a hard coworker

"Lord, you know how (name) gets under my skin. Show me what they're carrying that I can't see. Keep me from gossip. If it's possible, as much as it's up to me, let me be at peace with them. Amen." (Romans 12:18)

For a job you don't like

"Father, I don't love this job. Thank you that it feeds my family. Help me do it well while I'm here, and give me patience and wisdom about what's next. Open the right door at the right time. Until then, let me be faithful in this. Amen." (Luke 16:10)

When you're burned out

"Lord, I'm empty before I start. You said, 'Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.' Give me rest in the middle of work, and wisdom to see what has to change. Show me who to talk to. Amen." (Matthew 11:28)

For honesty at work

"God, when it would be easier to bend the truth, shade the numbers or take credit, keep me straight. Let my yes be yes and my no be no. Amen." (Matthew 5:37)

When you're looking for work

"Father, my job today is finding a job. Give me energy for applications, courage for calls, and patience with silence. Provide for us while we wait. Keep me from measuring my worth by an offer letter. Amen." (Philippians 4:19)

Mistakes that make work prayer hard

Common questions

What is a good short prayer before work?

"Lord, establish the work of my hands today, and help me work for you" (from Psalm 90:17 and Colossians 3:23). It takes ten seconds and covers the heart of it.

What does the Bible say about praying for your job?

It tells you to bring every need to God (Philippians 4:6), to ask for wisdom (James 1:5), to commit your plans to him (Proverbs 16:3), and to work as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23). Psalm 90:17 is a direct prayer for your work.

How do I pray for a bad day at work?

Tell God plainly what's coming, ask for strength for the next hour, not the whole day, and pray for the people involved. The "hard day ahead" prayer above is a place to start.

Can I pray at work?

Yes, silently, anywhere: before a call, at your desk, in the restroom. Short silent prayers like Nehemiah's don't interrupt anyone. Respect your workplace's rules for anything public.

What should I pray for my coworkers?

Their families, their health, their stress, wisdom in their work, and that they'd know God. Pray for the difficult ones too (Matthew 5:44). Our guide on how to pray for someone has words for each need.

Pray the prayer at the top of this page before work tomorrow, then try the 5-minute routine for a week. If you'd like your morning prayer led for you, ten minutes read aloud, play day 1 free, or answer a few questions for a 40-day prayer plan that fits your work hours.
