Thanksgiving prayer to God: prayers for the table, family and a hard year

A thanksgiving prayer to God thanks him for who he is and for what he has given: daily bread, the people around you, his forgiveness and his faithfulness. The Bible's own model is short: "Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever" (Psalm 107:1, WEB). Below is a prayer you can pray now, then graces for the Thanksgiving table, prayers for family and for a hard year, a reading to pray together, and a 7-day plan for the week before Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 26, 2026).

A thanksgiving prayer to God (pray it now)

Lord God, you are good, and your love endures forever.

Thank you for this year: for every meal, for a roof and a bed, for work and for rest. Thank you for the people you've given me, the easy ones and the hard ones. Thank you for the prayers you answered, and for the ones you answered differently than I asked.

Most of all, thank you for Jesus: for his life, his cross and his empty tomb, and for forgiveness I could never earn.

Forgive me for the days I grumbled and forgot. Give me a thankful heart, not only today but every day, in plenty and in want.

Every good gift comes from you. I give you thanks with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, amen.

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights" is James 1:17. "I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart" is Psalm 9:1.

How to pray a prayer of thanksgiving

You don't need special words. A simple shape helps, especially if you're praying aloud for others.

  1. Start with who God is. "Lord, you are good." Psalm 100 tells us to "enter into his gates with thanksgiving... For the LORD is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations" (Psalm 100:4–5, WEB). Thanks for God himself comes before thanks for his gifts.
  2. Name specific gifts. Not "thank you for everything" but "thank you for Mom's recovery, for the job that came through in March, for this table." Specific thanks is how you notice.
  3. Remember the big gift. "Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15, WEB). Christian thanksgiving always comes back to Christ.
  4. Thank him for the hard things too. Not that they happened, but that he was there in them. "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18, WEB). In everything, not for everything.
  5. Ask for a thankful heart. End by asking God to keep you grateful after the day is over.

That's the same pattern as the T in the ACTS prayer model: adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication, with thanks given its own room.

Thanksgiving prayers for the dinner table

A Thanksgiving grace should be short enough that the food stays warm: thirty seconds to a minute. Choose by who's at the table.

A short Thanksgiving grace

Lord, thank you for this food, for the hands that made it, and for everyone around this table. Bless our time together, and help us remember those who have less. In Jesus' name, amen.

A grace from Scripture

"The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing" (Psalm 145:15–16, WEB). Thank you, Lord, for opening your hand to us again this year. Amen.

A grace when not everyone at the table believes

Father, we're grateful to be together. Thank you for this meal and for each person here. Bless this day and everyone we love who can't be with us. Amen.

This keeps the prayer sincere without turning it into a sermon. Guests are welcomed, not preached at.

A grace for a big extended family

God, you've set us in families. Thank you for the grandparents who went before us, for the children who will come after, and for everyone in between. Heal what needs healing among us, give us patience with each other today, and fill this house with laughter. Bless this food and the cooks. Amen.

A grace when someone is missing

Lord, there's an empty chair at our table this year, and we feel it. Thank you for the years we had with [name]. Comfort us today, and hold every family that grieves this season. Thank you for this food and for each other. Amen.

A grace the children can say

Thank you, God, for food to eat, for friends and family that we meet, for all the love you give each day. Thank you, God. Amen.

Let a child lead it. Children often pray the most honest thanks at the table.

Psalm 136: a thanksgiving reading for the table

Psalm 136 was written to be prayed together: one voice reads the first half of each line, everyone answers "for his loving kindness endures forever." It works well before or after the meal. Here are verses 1–9 and 23–26 (World English Bible), short enough for a family:

LeaderEveryone
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,for his loving kindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods,for his loving kindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,for his loving kindness endures forever:
To him who alone does great wonders,for his loving kindness endures forever;
To him who by understanding made the heavens,for his loving kindness endures forever;
To him who spread out the earth above the waters,for his loving kindness endures forever;
To him who made the great lights,for his loving kindness endures forever;
The sun to rule by day,for his loving kindness endures forever;
The moon and stars to rule by night,for his loving kindness endures forever;
Who remembered us in our low estate,for his loving kindness endures forever;
And has delivered us from our adversaries,for his loving kindness endures forever:
Who gives food to every creature,for his loving kindness endures forever.
Oh give thanks to the God of heaven,for his loving kindness endures forever.

A family idea: after the psalm, go round the table and let each person add their own line ("Who gave Grandpa a good report from the doctor"), and everyone answers "for his love endures forever."

Thanksgiving prayers for family and friends

For your family

Father, thank you for my family, the people you chose for me. Thank you for [names]. Thank you for the ways they've loved me this year, and forgive me for the ways I've failed them. Draw us closer to each other and to you. Amen.

For friends

Lord, thank you for friends who stayed, who called, who prayed, who showed up with a meal. Thank you especially for [name]. Bless them in the coming year the way they've blessed me. Amen.

For your church

Jesus, thank you for my church: for the people who teach the children, who set up chairs, who visit the sick, who pray when no one sees. Thank you for our pastor. Keep us faithful and kind. Amen.

A thanksgiving prayer in a hard year

Not every Thanksgiving comes after a good year. Illness, a lost job, a divorce, a death: gratitude can feel out of reach. The Bible doesn't ask you to pretend. Habakkuk wrote a thanksgiving for a year when everything failed:

"For even though the fig tree doesn't flourish, nor fruit be in the vines, the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food, the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!" (Habakkuk 3:17–18, WEB)

You can pray in the same spirit:

Lord, this year has been hard, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. You already know. I'm tired, and some of what I prayed for didn't happen.

But I'm still here, and so are you. Thank you that you haven't left me. Thank you for the small mercies I can still see: [name one or two]. Your mercies are new every morning, even these mornings.

I don't feel very thankful, so I'm asking you to give me what I don't have. Carry me into next year. Amen.

"Your mercies... are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness" comes from Lamentations 3:22–23, written in a time of national grief. If this year has left you worn down, our prayer for strength during difficult times has prayers for grief, illness, money and family.

Bible verses to pray as thanksgiving

VerseWhat it gives thanks for
Psalm 100:4–5God's goodness, love and faithfulness
Psalm 103:1–5Forgiveness, healing, rescue, love, good things
Psalm 107:1God's goodness and lasting love
Psalm 118:24Today: "This is the day that the LORD has made"
Psalm 65:11The year's harvest: "You crown the year with your bounty"
Psalm 92:1–2Love in the morning, faithfulness at night
Deuteronomy 8:10Food and land: "You shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God"
Colossians 3:17Everything done "in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks"
Philippians 4:6Thanks mixed into every request
2 Corinthians 9:15Jesus, God's "unspeakable gift"

Psalm 103 is a good one to pray slowly on Thanksgiving morning. Read a verse, stop, and thank God for one way it's been true for you this year. "Praise the LORD, my soul, and don't forget all his benefits" (Psalm 103:2, WEB).

A 7-day thanksgiving prayer plan before Thanksgiving Day

Start on Friday, November 20, and you'll finish on Thanksgiving Day. Five to ten minutes a day: read the verse, then thank God for what the day names.

DayDate (2026)ReadGive thanks for
1Fri, Nov 20Psalm 100Who God is: good, loving, faithful
2Sat, Nov 21Psalm 104:10–24Creation, food, the seasons
3Sun, Nov 22Psalm 103:1–12Forgiveness and mercy
4Mon, Nov 23Ruth 1:16–17; Proverbs 17:17Family and friends, by name
5Tue, Nov 24Lamentations 3:19–26Where God carried you through something hard
6Wed, Nov 25Luke 17:11–19Answered prayers (the one leper who came back to thank)
7Thu, Nov 26Psalm 136Everything, together at the table

On day 6, notice the story: ten men were healed, and "one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice. He fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks" (Luke 17:15–16, WEB). Gratitude is turning back.

A gratitude list makes this plan stick: write three specific things each day, and read all 21 at the table on Thursday. Our prayer journal prompts include a week on thanks and praise.

Where Thanksgiving Day comes from

Days of thanksgiving to God were common in the American colonies, called by governors and churches after a harvest or a deliverance. The national holiday dates to 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November a day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," in the middle of the Civil War. In 1941 Congress fixed the holiday on the fourth Thursday of November, where it is today.

So the day was set apart, from the start, as a day of prayer. Giving thanks to God at the table isn't adding religion to a secular holiday; it's keeping the reason it began.

Keep giving thanks after Thursday

The Bible pictures thanks as daily, not yearly. "It is a good thing to give thanks to the LORD... to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night" (Psalm 92:1–2, WEB). Three simple ways to carry it on:

The season after Thanksgiving is Advent, the four weeks before Christmas. Our Advent prayers for each week pick up where this leaves off, starting Sunday, November 29. If you want to set aside a simpler day before the feast, our guide on how to pray when fasting shows how to turn a skipped meal into prayer.

Common questions

What is a good thanksgiving prayer to God?

One that thanks him for who he is, names specific gifts, and remembers Jesus. Psalm 107:1, "Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever," is a whole prayer in one line.

How long should a Thanksgiving dinner prayer be?

Thirty seconds to a minute. Save the longer prayer, or Psalm 136, for before dessert, when no one is waiting on hot food.

Who should say the Thanksgiving prayer?

The host usually does, but it's a lovely moment to ask a grandparent or let a child lead. Ask ahead, so no one is put on the spot.

How do I give thanks when I don't feel thankful?

Start small and honest. Name one thing, even "thank you that this day will end." Tell God you don't feel it and ask him to give you a thankful heart. Habakkuk 3:17–18 is a prayer for exactly that.

What does the Bible say about thanksgiving?

That thanks is a daily part of prayer (Philippians 4:6, Colossians 4:2), given in every circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18), and owed first to God for his goodness and for Christ (Psalm 100, 2 Corinthians 9:15).

Is it okay to pray at Thanksgiving with guests who aren't Christian?

Yes. Keep it short, warm and sincere, thank God for the food and the people, and don't use it to preach. Most guests are glad to be included.
