Prayer journal for men: a simple page, 30 days of prompts, and how to keep it going
A prayer journal for men is just a notebook where you write short prayers to God: what you're thankful for, what you got wrong, and what you need, often in five minutes before work. You don't need a special book. Below is a one-page layout to copy into any notebook or phone, what to write about work, family, temptation and anger, 30 days of prompts, how to journal with other men, and what to do the week it stops.
Why keep a prayer journal as a man?
Many men say the same thing about prayer: their mind wanders after thirty seconds, they don't know what to say, or they pray only in a crisis. Writing helps with all three. A pen keeps your mind on one thought at a time. A page with headings tells you what to say. And a dated record shows you, months later, how God carried you through the last crisis.
It's also private. A lot of men won't say out loud what's really going on: the debt, the temptation, the anger at home, the fear about a job. "Pour out your heart before him" (Psalm 62:8, WEB) is easier on paper first. Our guide to the benefits of a prayer journal goes deeper on what writing does for prayer, and where its limits are.
Scripture is full of men who prayed honestly. Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem's walls were broken and "sat down and wept, and mourned several days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven" (Nehemiah 1:4, WEB). David wrote down his fear, his guilt and his anger in the Psalms. A journal is the same kind of honesty, kept on a page.
The 5-minute page: a layout to copy
Copy these five headings onto a page. Fill each with one to three lines. That's the whole thing.
| Heading | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Today's date | Tue 4 Nov |
| Verse | One verse you read, written out | "Be strong and courageous... Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 |
| Thanks | Three specific things | Truck started. Son hugged me. Paycheck cleared. |
| Own up | One thing you got wrong, to God | Lost my temper over something small. Forgive me. |
| Ask | For you, and for one other person | Wisdom for the meeting at 10. Healing for Dad's back. |
That page takes about five minutes. Some men add a sixth line, Today I'll, with one thing to act on ("Call Mike back. Apologize first."). If you'd like more layouts (ACTS, Scripture, a weekly list, an answered prayer log), our prayer journal template guide has seven to copy.
What to write about: the six things most men carry
When you sit down and nothing comes, pick one of these. Each has a verse to start from and a line to finish in your own words.
1. Work and money
The job you have, the job you want, the boss, the bills. Nehemiah was standing in front of a king when he "prayed to the God of heaven" (Nehemiah 2:4, WEB), a one-line prayer in the middle of work. Write: "Lord, today at work I'm worried about ___. Give me ___." Our guide to morning prayer before work has prayers for a hard boss, a big meeting and a job you don't like.
2. Marriage
Write one thing you're thankful for in your wife, one way you let her down, and one thing to pray for her by name. Our guide on how to pray for your wife has ten things to pray, with a verse for each.
3. Children and fatherhood
"You fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4, WEB). Write each child's name and one thing you see in them this week. Then one prayer for each. See how to pray for your children for verses to pray over them by age.
4. Temptation
Be specific on paper, even if it's hard. Vague confession ("forgive my sins") rarely changes much. "Search me, God, and know my heart... See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way" (Psalm 139:23–24, WEB). Write the temptation, when it hits (late at night, when you're tired, when you're alone), and one step you'll take. If it's serious, tell one trusted man too; a page is a start, not the whole answer.
5. Anger and stress
Write what made you angry in one line, then write it again as a prayer. "I'm furious at ___" becomes "Lord, I'm furious at ___. Show me what's mine to fix and what's yours." Our prayer when feeling overwhelmed walks you through unloading everything on your mind, one item at a time.
6. Purpose
"What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8, WEB). Once a week, write: "Where did I do justice, love mercy, walk humbly this week? Where didn't I?"
30 days of prayer journal prompts for men
One prompt a day for a month. Write your answer as a prayer, starting with "Lord" or "Father."
| Week | Days 1–7 and on |
|---|---|
| Week 1: Start honest | 1. What am I most thankful for right now? 2. What's weighing on me today? 3. Where did I fall short yesterday? 4. Who do I need to forgive? 5. What am I afraid of? 6. What do I want God to do this month? 7. Read Psalm 23 and write which line I need. |
| Week 2: Home | 8. One thing you love in your wife (or the person closest to you). 9. How you let her down this week. 10. Each child by name, one prayer. 11. My parents, living or not. 12. A friend I've lost touch with. 13. Where home feels tense. 14. Read Ephesians 5:25–33 and write one change. |
| Week 3: Work and the world | 15. My work: what I'm grateful for in it. 16. A hard person at work. 17. Money: what I fear, what I have. 18. A decision I can't make alone. 19. Someone in need I could help this week. 20. My church and its leaders. 21. Read Micah 6:8 and write where I can act justly. |
| Week 4: Inside | 22. My anger: what sets it off. 23. My biggest temptation, named. 24. A habit I want to stop. 25. A habit I want to start. 26. Where I've seen God answer prayer. 27. What I want to be known for. 28. Read Psalm 139 and write what God knows about me. |
| Days 29–30 | 29. Read back the whole month. What changed? 30. Write a prayer for the next 30 days. |
If you want more prompts, our 40 prayer journal prompts are sorted by theme.
How to start a prayer journal (and pick the notebook)
- Pick a time you already keep. Coffee before work, lunch in the truck, after the kids are in bed. Tie the journal to it.
- Pick a notebook you won't mind ruining. A cheap pocket notebook, a field book, or the notes app on your phone. Expensive leather journals often sit unused because they feel too nice to write in.
- Keep it where you'll see it. Next to the coffee maker, in the truck's door, on the nightstand with a pen clipped to it.
- Write the first page tomorrow. Five headings, five minutes. Don't plan a system first.
- Go seven days before you change anything. If a heading never gets used, drop it.
A bought prayer journal for men can help if you like structure printed for you. There are dated ones, 30-day challenge ones and plain ones with a verse on each page. But any notebook and the layout above does the same job for the price of a pen.
Prayer journaling with other men
"Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend's countenance" (Proverbs 27:17, WEB). A journal is private, but it pairs well with a friend or small group.
- Same prompt, different pages. A men's group picks one prompt each week (from the 30 above), everyone journals on it, and at the meeting each man shares one line, only what he chooses.
- One accountability question. Each week, a friend asks: "Did you journal? What did you write under 'Own up'?" You can answer "I'd rather not say," but you'll have to say you wrote it.
- Pray each other's asks. Write your friend's request in your own Ask line for the week, and tell him when you have.
Our guide on how to pray for someone has words for praying aloud with a friend if that's new.
A filled-in example page
Here is what one honest page might look like, written in about six minutes:
Thu 6 Nov. Verse: "Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!" 1 Corinthians 16:13.
Thanks: Overtime came through. Slept the whole night. Emma laughed at dinner.
Own up: Lord, I was on my phone the whole evening and ignored everyone. I'm sorry.
Ask: Courage to talk to my supervisor about the schedule. Healing for Jake's knee. Help Sarah with her mom.
Today I'll: Phone in a drawer from 6 to 8.
Nothing eloquent. That's the point. A page like that, done most days, is a prayer life.
When it stops working
- You missed a week. Don't fill in the gap. Write today's date and start. Our guide on how to get your prayer life back has a 14-day restart.
- It feels like a chore. Cut it to two lines: one thanks, one ask. Grow it back later.
- You don't know what to say. Copy out a Psalm and write one sentence under it. Or try being led: our free day 1 reads a Psalm aloud and guides ten minutes of prayer you can journal from after, play day 1 free.
- You worry someone will read it. Use initials for people and sins, or keep it on a locked phone.
- It's all asks. Read back a month and mark answered prayers. Then add more thanks.
Common mistakes
- Writing a report, not a prayer. "Bad day at work" is a diary. "Lord, today at work was rough, help me with ___" is a prayer.
- Waiting to feel spiritual. Write when you're tired and flat. Those pages are often the most honest.
- Only writing in a crisis. The ordinary pages are what you read back in the crisis.
- Making it long. Five honest lines beat two pages you dread.
Common questions
What should a man write in a prayer journal?
The date, a verse, three things you're thankful for, one thing you got wrong, and what you're asking for yourself and someone else. Use the 30 prompts above when nothing comes.
Is a prayer journal for men different from any other?
The practice is the same for everyone. What men often need is a shorter page, fewer prompts about feelings and more about specific situations (work, money, family, temptation), and permission to write plainly.
How long should I journal each day?
Five minutes is enough to start. Some men grow to fifteen with a Bible reading. Our guide to how long you should pray each day has a plan from 5 to 30 minutes.
Can I use my phone instead of a notebook?
Yes. A plain notes app with the five headings works well and goes everywhere. Paper helps some men focus because there's nothing else on it.
What's a good first verse for a men's prayer journal?
Joshua 1:9, 1 Corinthians 16:13, Micah 6:8 and Psalm 139:23–24 are all quoted above. Write one out at the top of your first page.
Copy the five headings into a notebook tonight and write your first page tomorrow before work. If you'd like a daily prayer to journal from, answer a few questions to build your 40-day prayer plan. More in our prayer guides.
